Empowering SMEs in Crisis
Small and medium enterprises are often more vulnerable to natural and
human-caused crises, such as economic downturns, youth unrest, natural
disasters, and global pandemics. Hence, it is vital to provide them with the
necessary support, resources, and knowledge to ensure their resilience and
sustainable growth. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis
have highlighted the urgent need for empowering SMEs in times of crisis, as
they faced unprecedented challenges, including disruptions in global supply
chains, reduced consumer demand, and financial and political instability. In
response to these crises, various stakeholders, such as the government,
regulatory authorities, and the broader community, have recognized the
significance of supporting and empowering SMEs to not only survive but also
to thrive amidst adversity.
We, the Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya, are delighted to
bring together SME owners and academics for a dynamic and insightful
discussion on the theme "Empowering SMEs in Crisis," which is in line
with the Peradeniya University International Research Sessions (IPURSE)
2023. This forum serve as a platform to empower SMEs, facilitate
collaboration, and provide practical guidance during challenging times.
