Geminare 2023
Geminare: Talent Show 2023 was organized by the 1000 Level undergraduates of the English Language Teaching Unit, Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya. Held on the 3rd of May 2023 at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre, Faculty of Engineering, the event brought together a variety of performances, highlighting the creative abilities of the students through music, dance, drama, and more.
The name Geminare, derived from Latin, reflects the spirit of collaboration and expression that the event aimed to promote. The show served as a platform for students to step outside the classroom and apply their language and communication skills in a lively, engaging setting.
The performances spanned a range of genres, including short dramas, musical numbers, and group dances. Many items addressed everyday themes or social issues, while others focused on entertainment and artistic flair. Each performance demonstrated the effort and teamwork of the students involved.
The event was supported by the academic staff of the English Language Teaching Unit, whose guidance played a key role in preparing the students. It also received the warm presence of faculty members and invited guests, whose encouragement added to the positive atmosphere of the day.
Overall, Geminare 2023 was not only a creative outlet but also a practical learning experience. It allowed students to build confidence, improve their English communication skills, and work collaboratively — key goals of the ELTU’s ongoing efforts to enhance student engagement.
Luminara 2025
The Management Batch of 2023, under the auspices of the English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Management, proudly presented Luminara 2025 – a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration, and expression. “Luminara, defined as “illumination” or “light,” derived from Italian and Latin roots, symbolically reflected the illumination of every student as they rekindled their talents at this stage.
Luminara 2025 took place on the 27th of March, 2025 from 09.00am Onwards at the Faculty of Agriculture, Auditorium. The event brought together a lively audience and a venue well equipped to enhance the talent show experience with essential light and sound facilities, amplifying the experience to both the performers and audience.
This vibrant event was honored by the presence of the Chief Guest, Prof. Ranjith Pallegama, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Peradeniya who addressed the gathering with an inspiring speech on the importance of a holistic university life that lay instrumental in creating individuals of value to society. Also gracing the occasion, was the notable presence of Prof. Ravi Kuruppuge, the Dean, Faculty of Management and Prof. Pushpa Vitharana, who provided uplifting speeches that inspired the students present.
The event warmly acknowledged and welcomed other esteemed guests, including Deans of Other Faculties, Heads of Departments – Faculty of Management, Prof. Richard Wickramaratna, Dr. Anushka Hewa Heenipellage, Mr. Lakshman Kumara, Mr. Yenuka Pahalage, among other special invitees.
At its core, Luminara 2025 was more than just a platform for the undergraduates of the batch to showcase their innate talents to a wider audience. It was rather a catalyst in enhancing team spirit and unity among the batch as they worked in collaboration to perform their respective events ; overall, it brought to life the underlying motive of this talent show which was to increase the students’ fluency and confidence with the use of the English Language. This seed planted by the English Language Teaching Unit under the Leadership of Mr. Nalaka Hewage (Coordinator, English Language Teaching Unit, Faculty of Management), Ms. Gayathri Neththipola (Assistant Intensive English Course Coordinator, English Language Teaching Unit, Faculty of Management) and the lecturers of the ELTU undoubtedly came to life and was further nourished by the flamboyant talent witnessed on stage..
The talent show witnessed an array of performances from an eye-opening drama to a creative performance portrayed by each group, covering a plethora of themes. The dramas primarily commented on the various social conflicts that lay present in today’s status quo covering the genres of romance, tragedy, comedy and eclectic plots that most times kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The creative items ; similar in nature, were performed in the likes of Song, Music and Dance covering a range of variety that unanimously set the tone, rhythm and resonance much needed for a talent show of this nature.
As the event concluded, it is notable that Luminara 2025 was more than a talent show; it was a milestone. A celebration of potential, a spark of unity and a glimpse of the bright future that lies ahead for this talented cohort.
“The world is a complicated place, and there’s a lot of division between people. The performing arts tend to unify people in a way nothing else does.”
Luminara was a testament to this very saying, as it unified a batch in a way nothing else does.
Talent Odyssey 2024
Talent Odyssey 2024 was the Talent Show organised by the first-year undergraduates of the Batch of 2022 of the Faculty of Management under the guidance of the ELTU staff. It was held to mark the end of the Intensive English course offered by the English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Management for the new entrants of the 2022 batch.
Prof. Pushpa Vitharana, Head of the Department of English Language Teaching of the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, and Prof. Ravi Kuruppuge, Dean of the Faculty of Management, graced the occasion as distinguished invitees. It must be acknowledged that they have been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to the staff and the students alike, and their leadership, commitment, and motivation have been a blessing to the students of the Faculty of Management. The heads of all five departments of the Faculty of Management, the academic staff members of all the departments of the Faculty of Management, along with Mr. Lakshman Kumara, Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Management, and Mr. Yenuka Pahalage, Bursar of the Faculty of Management, attended the event in order to witness the talents of the first-year undergraduates.
Mr. Nalaka Hewage, Coordinator of the English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Management, Ms. Gayathri Neththipola, Assistant Intensive English Course Coordinator, and other members of the ELTU Staff, namely, Ms. Sanduni Atapattu, Ms. Vihangi Semini, Ms. Samadhi Delpachitra, Ms. Nethmi Navanjana, and Ms. Azra Banu, have been instrumental in organising the event and guiding the students to reach new heights of glory.
Talent Odyssey 2024 was held on April 2, 2024, from 12.30 PM onwards at the Management Faculty Auditorium. The main objective of the event was to enable students to showcase their talents and enhance their English language skills. It was held in the form of a non-competitive event where each group of students staged a drama and a creative item of their choice. There were multifarious items, such as dramas, songs, and dancing items, that glamoured the evening.
Taprobane 2022
Taprobane 2022 was a vibrant talent show organized by the first-year undergraduates of the 2020 batch from the Faculty of Management, under the guidance of the ELTU staff. The event was financially supported by the Faculty AHEAD Grant. Special recognition goes to Ms. R. M. C. Kumari, the Activity Coordinator, and Ms. Sandamalie Hettiarachy, a member of the Faculty-Level AHEAD sub-committee (AHEAD – Activity 05), for their unwavering support and dedication to both the ELTU and the students, which significantly contributed to the success of the event.
The occasion was graced by distinguished invitees, including Prof. P. R. K. A. Vitharana, Head of the Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Arts, and Prof. Athula Ekanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya. Their constant encouragement, inspirational leadership, and genuine commitment have been invaluable to the students and staff of the Faculty of Management.
In addition, the Heads of all Departments of the Faculty of Management, academic staff members, Mr. W. V. Lakshman Kumara, Assistant Registrar of the Faculty, and the Faculty Bursar were present to witness the remarkable talents displayed by the first-year students.
Significant contributions to the event also came from Mr. Nalaka Hewage, Coordinator of the English Language Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Management, and Ms. Amanda Ekanayake, Chairperson of the organizing committee. The ELTU staff; Ms. Sanduni Atapattu, Ms. Vihangi Semini, and Mr. Sandun Lakshan, played a pivotal role in guiding and supporting the students to reach new heights of excellence.
Taprobane 2022 was held on December 12, 2022, from 1:00 PM onwards at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre, Faculty of Engineering. The event aimed to provide students a platform to showcase their creative talents while enhancing their English language proficiency and celebrating their Sri Lankan cultural identity. The programme featured a variety of performances, including dramas, songs, and dance acts.
As a competition-based event, awards were presented for categories such as Best Class, Best Drama, and Most Creative Item. The judging panel comprised esteemed professionals: Ms. Ruwantha Kulatunga, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Classical Languages; Mr. Indrajee De Zoysa, Coordinator of the ELTU, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Arts; and Mr. Isuru Samaranayake, Lecturer, Department of Management Studies, Faculty of Management.
Certificates were awarded to the winners, followed by a special presentation of certificates to students who had successfully completed the Certificate Course in Business English – 2022, also funded by the Faculty AHEAD Grant.
