Speak to Lead'19, the Annual Debate Competition
Speak to Lead, the debate competition organized by the ELTU of the Faculty of Management held its second consecutive event as Speak to Lead'19 on 17th of December 2019 at the Faculty Auditorium. The teams for the event were selected through a competitive initial round held at class level. On the day of the event, four teams named The Trailblazers, Voice of Victory, The Talking Heads and The Idealists competed with each other in the semi-final round. Dr. M. Alfred, the Dean of the Faculty of Management graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Ms. Muditha Dharmasiri, Lecturer, Department of Classical Languages, Faculty of Arts, Dr. Ravi Kuruppuge, Senior Lecturer, Department of Operations Management and Mrs. Champika Rathnayake, Senior Lecturer, Department of Management Studies acted as the Panel of Judges.
In line with the faculty objective of producing students who excel not only in academics but also in their soft skills, Speak to Lead '19 aimed at assisting the students to overcome their reluctance related to speaking English while developing their ability to think on their feet, research, critical thinking and analytical skills. Moreover, the students' abilities to take quick notes, effective speech composition and delivery were well-displayed on stage.
Voice of Victory lead by B. M. S. B. Basnayake secured the Championship trophy competing in the final round with The Talking Heads lead by G. Santharasa. Voice of Victory's members were B.M.S.B. Basnayake, D.R.D. Wijesinghe, H.H.S. Chandika, A.M.K.P. Alweera and The Idealists' members were G. Santharasa, W.P.U.D. Wickramarathne, M.C.P. Fernando, L.H.S.S.Lanka and K.G.P.M. Jayarathne. The medal for the Best Speaker of the day was achieved by Bhagya Nanayakkara who represented The Talking Heads. Behind the graceful success of the event was the support rendered by the Organizing Committee of the event led by its President, H.G.I Ridma Dilshan and the Secretary, J.M.T.C.T. Nawarathna.
